Week 1 Post 3-The Buying and Selling of Reproductive Materials

I was very interested in what I learned this week, I really had not thought of those ethical problems with the selling of eggs and sperm before. I figured that it was a good way for people to make money, and let women have more power in their lives. I was disappointed but not surprised to learn that the stereotypes of women and men persisted into this realm. I also found the language used in the course to be very oriented towards cis people, as egg sellers where only referred to as women, and sperm sellers as men. This is not necessarily the fault of the course but of the market, who would not except anyone who did not fit within the gender binary. I also wish they would have brought up the idea of autonomy, that people can do whatever they want with their bodies, which includes selling reproductive materials.

One question I have is how does the argument of autonomy play a role in the defense of the market? Another question I have is what would be the most effective regulations to solve the most prevalent ethical dilemmas?

  1. Should autonomy play any role here?

    1. I think autonomy should play a role in arguments about the regulation of these materials. Since they are a person's bodily materials, there could be an argument made about bodily autonomy, and how people should be allowed to use their own materials in whatever way they want, including selling them.
