Week 4 Post 3-Genetic Testing Inequities
I was very surprised by my learning this week as I was unaware of the racial disparities in genetic databases. I also found it interesting how people are so closely related to one another genetically, but can be so different from each other. This made me think about the evolution of species from one to another and how new species can be created without a radical amount of genetic change. I was also upset to hear about the details of racism in the medical field, as I knew it existed, but I was not aware of the statistics. Learning about that variant that causes people to have lowered CRP levels, and therefore not get treatment reminded me of something we talked about last share and connect meeting. I agree with the articles I read that say collective more diverse genetic material is critical for scientific advancement because I think science needs to work on being more inclusionary in general
One question I have is what would be the best way to collect data for different populations? Another question I have is how has the pandemic effected genetic data for databases? How do genetic databases deal with privacy concerns from people who are giving samples
Did you get the BBC article I sent? "Human cells grown in monkey embryos spark ethical debate"
ReplyDeleteHow does that connect with your new learning?
